Borussia Dortmund remain confident that Manchester United will fail in any bid to sign İlkay Gündoğan and hope the German international will sign a new deal in the coming weeks.

With Robert Lewandowski heading to Bayern Munich in the summer, Dortmund are especially keen not to let another of their prize assets leave.

The German international , however, is out of contract at the end of next season and is yet to agree a new deal with Dortmund.

The Bundesliga club's sporting director Michael Zorc insists their prime concern is getting Gündoğan fit, with the midfielder having been sidelined since August with a back problem.

"For İlkay, the most important thing is that he gets well first," Zorc told Bild. "But we will soon have discussions with him and his family, we have a very good relationship with them."

Last week more volatile quotes emanated from the continent after Zorc pleaded with the 23-year-old to 'understand that BVB needs clarity.'

"Ilkay is of interest to other clubs,” he said.

“The other party needs to understand that BVB needs clarity.

“Our top priority is to find out if there is a willingness to prolong the contract.”
