Transfer news: Chelsea have not ended pursuit of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney hints Jose Mourinho

Blues boss claims that the club will maintain their attempt to sign a new striker until the last day of the transfer window after triumphing against Hull on his return to Stamford Bridge

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has dropped his latest hint that he remains determined to sign Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney after he admitted the club will try till the final day of the season to bring in a new striker.

Mourinho has openly admitted his interest in the England striker, while the club have seen two offers rejected by the 27-year-old’s current club, with United boss David Moyes remaining defiant that the forward is not for sale.

But the Blues are believed to be preparing a third offer for Rooney in an effort to tempt United to sell the unhappy player, who looked visibly unsettled on Saturday as United got their Premier League title defence off to a winning start at Swansea.

The two clubs are due to face each other a week today and the Blues remain hopeful that he could even line-up at Old Trafford in a blue shirt rather than a red one.

"We will try till the last day to add a new player to the squad, a striker, but in this moment every striker has a club, every striker belongs to somebody and I don't think it's ethical that I name players that belong to other clubs," claimed Mourinho after witnessing Chelsea's 2-0 defeat of Hull on his emotional return to Stamford Bridge yesterday.

"We don't try, like many clubs do, to go around and try to influence players to behave in a certain way.

"If we have to make a bid, we make it in an official way, we don't speak to players, we speak to clubs."

Goals from Oscar and Frank Lampard came after the latter had a penalty saved by Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor, and Mourinho was delighted with their start to the new season, claiming that the style of their victory was more pleasing than the actual result.

"I played so many times here, I won so many matches here, but we didn't have so many periods of such fantastic quality like we had (against Hull)," Mourinho said.

"I'm happy we managed to win and we managed to show that this is the football we want to play, this is the football we can play.

"Now it's up to us to make it happen more times and more times during the game."

Tigers boss Steve Bruce chose to give five of his new signings their first competitive starts against the Blues, but kept midfield duo Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore on the bench until the second half after they signed from Tottenham last week.

The two made a clear impact to the visitors performance, but Bruce defended his decision to start them on the bench after they only joined up with the squad a few days before the match at Stamford Bridge.

"Believe it or not we've been trying to work on a system to play against Chelsea for the last two, three weeks," Bruce said.

"We've only had them 48 hours, really, and also you have to be kind to the players who got you here, from rainy nights in Barnsley.

"(But) make no mistake the two boys from Tottenham will make a huge difference to us.

"And we've got many games to play where we won't be playing Chelsea every week, thankfully."
