Transfer news: Everton may offer Gareth Barry way out of Manchester City but £100,000-a-week wages could hinder a loan-deal

Everton could look to offer Gareth Barry a way out of Manchester City after the England midfielder was told he could leave the club, but talks are stalling on a compromise for his substantial wages.

Manuel Pellegrini doesn’t see Barry in his City plans and has told the midfielder he is free to go having brought in £30m Fernandinho, and the 32-year-old was left out of the 18-man squad for their opening Premier League fixture against Newcastle on Monday.

However, Barry is currently on £100,000-a-week making a loan move to Goodison Park dependent on a compromise between the two clubs as Everton can’t afford to pay his salary in full.

Roberto Martinez his hopeful a deal can be completed before another team comes in for Barry, with Arsenal believed to be considering an offer for the former Aston Villa player, who has just one-year left on his contract at the Etihad.

City captain Vincent Kompany limped out of the match against Newcastle and could face up to a month on the sidelines, and with Pellegrini already keen to add a central defender to his squad, he may be forced to make an addition sooner than he had hoped with just Joleon Lescott fit to play at the back.

Matija Nastasic is yet to return having picked up an injury in the pre-season Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong, and Kompany will have a scan today after giving the injury time to settle in a hope to reveal the full extent of the problem.

Pellegrini had tried to sign Real Madrid defender Pepe after director of football Txiki Begiristain flew to Spain to try and negotiate a deal, but new Real boss Carlo Ancelotti is keen on keeping the Portuguese defender at the Santiago Bernabeu after Raphael Varane missed the majority of pre-season with a knee injury.

The Chilean manager is also looking into the possibility of signing former Malaga defender Martin Demichelis, who only joined Atletico Madrid this summer from Pelegrini’s former club after his contract expired.

City are hoping to secure the Argentine defender for around £2m, but Atletico are holding out for more with £7m believed to be their valuation.

Dependent on Kompany’s injury, he could face yet another club-v-country row as he could return to fitness ahead of Belgium’s World Cup qualifier against Scotland. Kompany was criticised by former City boss for playing for his country in March after being ruled out for two months before the match, but Belgium could secure their place at next year’s World Cup in Brazil with a win in Glasgow and will hope that the centre-back is available for selection.

City remain hopeful though that he will be available for selection against Stoke on September 14th – eight days before they are due to meet fierce rivals Manchester United – and they could be boosted with the return of Nastasic for the game at Cardiff this weekend.

Winger Scott Sinclair is expected to leave the club later this week, having failed to make an impact since his transfer from Swansea last season. A loan-move to West Brom with a view to a £4m permanent deal has been reported despite interest from Newcastle and Everton, and Sinclair will look to restart his England chances with a move to the Hawthorns.
