Martial was a notable omission from United’ Uefa Super Cup defeat by Real Madrid during the week, with manager Jose Mourinho leaving the France international on the bench, and Spurs clearly tried to structure a cut-price move for the former Monaco striker, who cost United upwards of £46m just two years ago.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp appeared resigned to losing Philippe Coutinho this summer, with the German acknowledging that you cannot keep unhappy players at clubs against their will. The Brazil midfielder missed Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Watford on Saturday, with Barcelona poised to make another offer for him after his transfer request on Friday.
Alexis Sanchez has resumed training with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insisting that he will stay at the Emirates this season, despite intense interest from Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain. The Chilean striker was in the stands on Friday to watch Arsenal’s 4-3 victory over Leicester City.
However, it looks like PSG will steal the headlines once again, with a move for Kylian Mbappe close to completion that could see the Monaco forward join for more than the £200m it cost the Parisians to side Neymar.

Good morning and welcome to The Independent's transfer live blog, where we'll bring you all the latest news, done deals and breaking rumours as well as reflect on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.
We start this morning with the big story that broke yesterday in Tottenham's surprise move for Manchester United forward Anthony Martial. Reports originated in France that United have already rejected an offer of £25m for the Frenchman, but The Independent understands that the interest from Spurs IS genuine and they could well make a second offer for the 21-year-old.
Here's the full story:
Man United reject Tottenham bid for Anthony MartialThe IndependentTottenham have had a bid rejected for Anthony Martial, according to reports in his native France. The 21-year-old forward's future at Manchester United has been in doubt this summer with Jose Mourinho preferring wide players that will play with more defensive discipline than the French international.
Joe Hart makes his return to Premier League football later today when West Ham take on Manchester United, following a year on loan with Italian side Torino. The goalkeeper will love the chance to get one other United, given his Manchester City roots, but he told Jack Lang that his focus is on lighting up the league all other again:
Joe Hart on West Ham, leaving City and fighting Andy CarrollThe IndependentThere is something different about Joe Hart when he ducks out of the unwanted summer rain and into the press room at West Ham's training ground. It's not the way he talks – there's no Italian twang after his year with Torino, sadly – and there's no change to the familiar swagger. No, it's something far more prosaic than that: he has a black eye.
Jamie Carragher has seen plenty of players come and go during his time with Liverpool with big stars such as Luis Suarez and Javier Mascherano leaving Anfield for Barcelona. The same appears to be happening with Philippe Coutinho, but the former England defender now believes there is "no way" they can sell the midfielder after last Friday's defiant statement.
Here's the full story:
After surviving an almighty scare on Friday night against Leicester City, Arsene Wenger revealed why Arsenal decided against trying to sign Riyad Mahrez this summer. The midfielder has been linked with a move to Roma and handed in a transfer request earlier in the summer, but so far a move has failed to materialise.
There's no looking beyond it, if Chelsea needed new players before this weekend, they are now in a desperate situation. Two red cards in the 3-2 defeat by Burnley, one to captain Gary Cahill and the other to Cesc Fabregas, leaves Chelsea incredibly short on options for next weekend;s meeting with Tottenham, and manager Antonio Conte knows reinforcements need to brought in immediately.
Barcelona still want to sign Ousmane Dembele, but Borussia Dortmund are determined not to sell him and the result of the forward going AWOL on Thursday is the indefinite suspension slapped down on the France international. Dembele in known to want to join Barcelona, but he missed training during the week without permission and the Bundesliga club are none to pleased about it.

Wales Online this morning report that goalkeeper Danny Ward is set for showdown talks with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, after he was left out of the club’s 18-man squad for the 3-3 draw with Watford.
Ward, 24, spent last season on loan at Huddersfield, helping the club to win promotion to the Premier League.
There was speculation that the Welshman would move to the club permanently this summer, but Klopp did not want to let him leave and assured Ward he had a future at Liverpool.
However, Ward may now push for a move away as he fears he will waste a season playing for Liverpool’s reserve team.
United could face a challenge to re-sign Zlatan Ibrahmovic when he regains fitness.
The Swedish striker, a free agent after his deal at Old Trafford expired, is wanted by former club AC Milan, who want to take the 35-year-old back to the San Siro according to the Telegraph.
Here's the latest on his situation:
