The transfer window is open which means it's that time of year when stories of clubs spending ludicrous sums of money on players you've never heard of is par for the course. Here, we take a look at some of today's more intriguing rumours...

Gareth Bale is yet again taking the transfer headlines in today’s national newspapers. The Welsh winger looks close to moving to Spain with Real Madrid’s coach Carlo Ancelotti claiming that they are currently in talks with Spurs, though Ancelotti flatly denied that Luka Modric would be a part of the deal. Claims are coming out of Madrid that Real’s increased pursuit of Bale could be due to the breakdown in talks over the renewal of Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract, amid speculation he wants to move away from the Bernabeu.

Roberto Soldado has signed a deal moving him from Valencia to White Heart Lane. It is still subject to a medical but the Spanish club and Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a fee of £26m. Moving away from Spurs today is Steven Caulker who has signed with Cardiff City for £8m. l

Joey Barton has curbed speculation that he could make a move away from QPR to Premier League side Everton. Yesterday Barton’s manager, Willie McKay, acknowledged that he had talks with Roberto Martinez.

Steven Gerrard has told the press that Liverpool should not sell Luis Suarez arguing that Liverpool would go backwards should the Uruguayan move to the Emirates.

At Old Trafford today Manchester United have shown interest in signing Juventus’ Claudio Marchisio and David De Gea has spoken out urging compatriot Cesc Fabregas to join United.

Barcelona players are up to their usual tricks as they attempt to lure David Luiz to the Camp Nou. Xavi has reportedly said that, "it's impossible to overlook his name” as he went on to highlight Luiz’s excellent performance during Brazil’s victory at the Confederations Cup.
