January transfer window 2019: Premier League transfer round-up

The Premier League's January transfer window is upon us with Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham all set to be busy.

Liverpool were the summer's biggest spenders with no fewer than four new arrivals. Goalkeeper Alisson was the headline-grabber with the Brazilian already proving worth every penny of the world-record fee the Reds shelled out for the Brazilian. Could long-term target Nabil Fekir join him next month? United got a couple of new faces in through the door in the summer but it hasn't made a difference with Jose Mourinho out and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in. Will he spend them out of trouble in the January sales?

Chelsea have made the biggest splash with the signing of Borussia Dortmund's Christian Pulisic while Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal could all choose to dip their toes in the water as they battle for an all-important top four spot. Let's start today at Arsenal where Aaron Ramsey is said to have agreed his next move.

The Welsh international is out of contract in the summer and with no new deal forthcoming is free to talk to foreign clubs.

One of those is Juventus who, according to reports in Italy, have persuaded Ramsey to sign a pre-contract agreement with them.

He'll join for nothing on July 1 as the likes of Bayern Munich, PSG and Real Madrid miss out.

To Chelsea where Alvaro Morata's frustrating stay could be coming to an end.

The Spaniard has struggled for form and as such has been linked with a move away this month.

Sevilla are the latest club to show an interest in a short-term deal with sporting director Joaquin Caparros confirming they are looking into it.

"We are working on many names. The important thing is that the player wants to come to Sevilla."

Daniel Sturridge could be offered a new Liverpool contract, according to the Daily Mail.

Sturridge has six months remaining on his existing Anfield deal and can now negotiate a pre-contract arrangement with clubs outside England.

Monaco, Milan, Sevilla and Inter are among those named as a potential suitors, but Liverpool are said to be considering whether to off the 29-year-old renewed terms.

Mario Balotelli could be set for a surprise return to the Premier League.

The Italian is set to have his contract cancelled at Nice and is expected to join Marseille on a free transfer.

But the Mirror report that Newcastle are also interested in taking him.

Diego Godin appears unlikely to sign a new contract with Atletico Madrid.

Godin's current deal expires in the summer and Marca report that any chance of the 32-year-old renewing his stay is now "slim".

The Uruguayan was the subject of eleventh-hour interest from Manchester United on the final day of the summer transfer window, though their advances failed.

Arsenal are another side who could move for reinforcements this month.

One of those could be Chelsea's Gary Cahill although Unai Emery was tight-lipped on such matters when quizzed on Sunday. Fulham are also keen.

Another outgoing at Chelsea could be Cesc Fabregas.

The Spaniard's contract expires in the summer with Monaco apparently keen on taking him to France this month.

Thierry Henry is very interested in a reunion with his former Arsenal teammate and could also move for Crystal Palace’s Mamadou Sakho.

Valencia will make a move for West Ham United‘s Javier Hernandez, and believe the Mexican international wants to return to La Liga.

The Spanish club are eager to change their goal-shy attack due to the struggles of Kevin Gameiro and Michy Batshuayi, with the latter set to return to Chelsea after an unsatisfactory loan move.

Valencia’s financial situation means they would favour a similar temporary move for Hernandez, but that is seen as the main obstacle to any deal.

Big news over at Tottenham this morning as the club have exercised an option to extend Toby Alderweireld's contract by a year to the end of the 2019/2020 season.

The Belgium international's original contract was due to run out in the summer, and he has been free to talk to clubs about a pre-contract agreement since January 1. 

However, while the extension means he won't leave on a free transfer this season, it has triggered a £25m release clause in his contract which could interest potential suitors in the coming months.

The 29-year-old centre-back has made 135 appearances for the club since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2015, following an impressive loan spell at Southampton in the 2014/2015 season.
