Transfer news: Toni Kroos contract demands 'going through the roof' say Bayern Munich, opening up possible switch to Manchester United

Bayern Munich's honorary president has revealed that the contract demands of Toni Kroos are “going through the roof”, however the club remain determined to retain the Germany international.

Kroos has been linked with a switch to Manchester United, with David Moyes understood to be keen on signing the 24-year-old midfielder. A fee of around £25m has been mooted.

The player showed just why he is thought of so highly with his commanding display at the Emirates against Arsenal in the Champions League. In that match he made the same number of completed passes as the Gunners' entire outfield team. He also broke the deadlock with a fine curled effort from the edge of the box.

Kroos' contract expires in the summer of 2015 and talks are ongoing between the player and the reigning European champions. Franz Beckenbauer, the Bayern Munich honorary president, has given an insight to negotiations and with it warned the player not to overplay his position.

"You have to make a decision as a club when someone's demands are going through the roof," said Beckenbauer.

"There is not a single player who's worth changing your entire wage structure for. Nobody's indispensable. If the player wants to stay at Bayern, I can only advise him not to overplay his hand."

Manchester United proved in their dealings with Wayne Rooney that they are not afraid to be among the best payers in world football. The England striker was given a contract worth £300,000-a-week to remain at Old Trafford.

However, despite Beckenbauer's comments seemingly opening the door to a summer transfer, Matthias Sammer, Bayern's sporting director, has said the club are "determined" to ensure Kroos stays at the Allianz Arena.

"Toni has a contract until the summer of 2015 and he will not be going anywhere before then," said Sammer.

"And we are determined to make sure he will stay at Bayern beyond the expiry date of his current deal. We really value Toni and have shown so more than once."
