No sooner had progression to the Champions League last-16 given Jose Mourinho’s precise breathing space at Chelsea than his future is in doubt once again following the damaging 2-1 defeat by Premier League leaders Leicester on Monday night.

Mourinho turned on his players after admitting he had been “betrayed” by their inability to perform against the Foxes, who were clearly the better team and left the Blues 20 points off the top of the table and just one point above the relegation zone.

With time running out for Mourinho to turn the reigning champions’ form around, heads are immediately turning to who could replace the Portuguese at Stamford Bridge if the club owner Roman Abramovich finally loses his patience and gives Mourinho the boot for a second time.

As revealed by the Independent’s Mark Ogden earlier this month, Italy manager Antonio Conte heads the Chelsea wish-list if they dispense with Mourinho’s services, although complications with a duel-role and other short-term options means the Italian is far from the only option available for the Chelsea board to consider.

Taking into account availability, relationship and their reputation, we take a look at the 12 most suitable options for Chelsea to appoint manager if they sack Mourinho.
