England v Costa Rica preview

Gareth Southgate will get a final opportunity to see his England stars in action against Costa Rica before they travel to Russia for the start of the World Cup 2018.

The Three Lions boss is expected to shuffle the pack after watching his side beat Nigeria 2-1 at Wembley on Saturday, with Jack Butland to be given a chance to prove himself as Jordan Pickford’s understudy for the tournament.

Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold will both start after arriving late to the training camp following the Champions League final, while there could also be opportunities for Jamie Vardy, Harry Maguire and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Danny Rose could also get a start in place of Ashley Young following his revelations about his depression this week.

As we approach kick off at Elland Road here's a quick overview of tonight's opponents.

Costa Rica will provide a tough test for England, with their experienced squad expecting to build on an impressive showing at the last World Cup. There they showed their clinical attacking and resolute defending, and Southgate will know victory here will be far from easy.

Joel Campbell, currently on loan at Real Betis from Arsenal, can pose a real attacking threat with his pace and power, but has struggled with consistency - perhaps shown by his inability to ever feature consistently for the Gunners.

The anthems are underway with Lizzie Jones singing God Save The Queen, in what is a proud moment for Trent Alexander-Arnold. His debut tonight at the age of 19 comes off the back of a successful season for Liverpool and looks to be the start of a promising career for both club and country.
