Uruguay France World Cup quarter-final preview

It's the World Cup quarter-finals, this is where it gets really serious. Both Uruguay and France have plenty of history in the latter stages of the competition and will meet in a clash of styles.

France have been reliant on the bright attackers, while Uruguay have been easing their way through the rounds as a result of their brilliant defending.

Uruguay captain Diego Godin has been influential in their success but faces his biggest test after seeing off Cristiano Ronaldo. Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe have been in good form in Russia but will have to be at their best to score past Uruguay.

When is it?

Uruguay vs France is on Friday 6 June and kicks off at 15:00 at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

Where can I watch it?

ITV will be showing live coverage on ITV 1 and online on the ITV Hub.

Odds

Uruguay: 7/2

France: 1/1

Draw (90 minutes): 2/1

How did they get here?

France beat Argentina 4-3 in one of the most thrilling World Cup round of 16 matches to earn their place in the quarter-final. Mbappe announced himself on the world stage with a brace and a scintillating run from deep to win a penalty. Les Bleus qualified first in their group after wins against Australia and Peru and a draw with Denmark.

While France are in the last eight courtesy of their wealth of attacking talent, Uruguay have been heavily dependent on their defence and the only goal they conceded in the tournament came in their 2-1 victory against Portugal in the round of 16. Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani have been sharing out the goals at the top of the team.

What is their World Cup history?

Uruguay have twice lifted the famous trophy, including the first ever World Cup in 1930.

Current manager Didier Deschamps captained France to victory in the 1998 World Cup final which remains their only ever win.

Prediction

France 2-1 Uruguay. It what has the potential to be the dullest game of the tournament so far, but also the most exciting, France will likely grind it out in the same way they did in the groups.

KICK-OFF: Almost as a metaphor for Uruguay's Cavani-less predicament, Luis Suarez takes a one-man kick-off to get the first quarter-final of the 2018 World Cup underway. Oscar Tabarez's team are in their usual sky blue shirts and dark blue shorts; France are in all white.

2 mins: Olivier Giroud is injured and angry, and that's never a good combination. France's lone striker hits the deck inside 90 seconds after being caught on the achilles by the studs of Jose Gimenez. You really want to give the Uruguay defender the benefit of the doubt but then you remember it's a Uruguayan defender. Referee Nestor Pitana, however, didn't see anything wrong with the challenge.

5 mins: There may be no Cavani in the Uruguayan attacking ranks, but that hasn't stopped the South Americans putting France under pressure in these early moments. Quick and low deliveries into the penalty area have had the French defence all at sea, and in need of some desperate clearances, often at the third, fourth and fifth attempts.

9 mins: Lucas Hernandez is the third French player to find themselves floored by an opponent in the opening ten minutes. The French left-back is first clattered on the near touchline by the late challenge of Stuani and then, as he attempted to get up to remonstrate, was knocked back down by a 'stumbling' Nahitan Nandez.

14 mins: Lucas Torreira, an imminent arrival at Arsenal, takes the first corner of the game with an outswinging delivery from the right. Gimenez manages to meet the cross with a weak downward header that Lloris manages to punch clear on the dive before another Uruguayan can turn the ball in.

15 mins: From a week header at one end to a worse effort at the other. Man Boy of the moment, Kylian Mbappe, finds himself in acres of space inside the Uruguay penalty area to connect with a dropping ball, but gets his connection all wrong in looping the chance over the crossbar.

20 mins: Neat footwork from Antoine Griezmann in the final third opens up opportunities for France to threaten. In attempting to feed in Mbappe, the Atletico Madrid man ignores Benjamin Pavard on the right corner of the penalty area. Although Mbappe is quickly dispossessed on receiving the ball, it's still probably the correct decision from Griezmann. I mean, as if Pavard would have a hope in hell in scoring from there...

23 mins: Still, it could be worse for Pavard. At least he wasn't needlessly clattered in the ribs by Suarez while seeing the ball run out of play for a throw-in. Oh, now he has.

It might be an idea for the officials to start clamping down on some of the more unnecessary physical elements to Uruguay's game before this contest gets out of hand.

If I told you that Hugo Lloris was being bothered by a pest buzzing around his goalmouth, you'd immediately think of Luis Suarez again, wouldn't you?

Well...

30 mins: Mbappe, Giroud and Tolisso all consider lunging at a cross into the box from the right flank but ultimately decide it. The Uruguayan defence, at the moment, is standing up admirably - and sometimes underhandedly - to the threat of this talented French attack.
