2018 Russia World Cup in numbers

Peru have not qualified to the World Cup in 32 years, but finally booked a spot for Russia after a 2-0 victory over New Zealand in the second leg of their play-off.

However, their preparation has been badly disrupted by captain Paolo Guerrero's failed drugs test, and while he is available for their World Cup opener against Denmark, his availability has not gone without its controversy.

The Danes will clearly hope to take advantage of this, with Age Hareide's squad looking to make a comeback after their failed attempt to propel themselves out of their group back in 2010.

Kep player Christian Eriksen is also in good form after scoring a hat-trick against the Republic of Ireland in the play-offs.

It's national anthem time.

On this showing, you have to say it's advantage Peru. Sung passionately by the players, roared from the stands.

KICK-OFF: Christian Eriksen gets the game underway with a one-man showing that perhaps is a sign of things to come. Denmark, all in red, are attacking from right to left against Peru, back at the World Cup finals for the first time in 36 years.

2 mins: Early pressure from the Peruvians has Denmark on their toes. An overhit cross from the left is kept alive by Jefferson Farfan before the two number 20s, Edison Flores and Yussuf Yurary Poulsen, clash in the area. In the right place, referee Bakary Gassama says no penalty.

5 mins: Another Peru attack ends with a wild 30-yard shot from Luis Advincula sailing into the stands. However, more of a concern for the South Americans was the shape their defence took when Denmark pushed forward a minute earlier. A defence all at sea.

8 mins: Another long range effort, this one at least 35 yards from goal, is much more threatening. It's so cleanly and powerfully hit by Yoshimar Yotun that either side of Kasper Schmeichel and I may have been describing one of the great World Cup strikes. As it is, it thumped straight into the body of the Denmark goalkeeper.

11 mins: A third long range effort from Peru, this time from Edison Flores, who actually plays his football in Denmark with Aalborg. This one is off target but the South Americans clearly trust their shooting ability.

13 mins: Fine save by Schmeichel! Pione Sisto lost possession on his left, allowing Peru move to forward at pace. Andre Carrillo, who spent the season on loan at Watford, cut inside from the wing and curled his shot towards the far corner. Equal to it, however, was the Leicester City goalkeeper, pushing the ball to safety.

17 mins: The South Americans are showing so much energy all over the pitch. heir technical ability isn't bad either, it's just their decision making that could do with some work. Dispossessing Kvist in midfield, Yotun is so quick to play Carillo into space on the right. The forward then shows great skill before eventually running into trouble with teammates well positioned.

The Peruvians are performing a tactical masterclass to nullify Denmark's most dangerous asset. It seems some could learn a thing or two.

Here's a Danish milestone that keeps it in the family.
