While we all love watching goals in the moment, there’s nothing better than nostalgia when remembering great teams and players.

Lionel Messi, unsurprisingly, is among the most popular players when fans search for their favourite goals from the past.

The Argentine has three of the top 10 most-watched goals on YouTube, according to Ticket Gum.

Wayne Rooney’s bicycle kick against Man City, Zinedine Zidane’s pirouette against Bayer Leverkusen and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s insane biycle kick against England are just some of the most memorable strikes of the last 20 years.

Here are the top 10 ranked in descending order of total views.

10. Sergio Aguero, Man City vs QPR (2012) – 2.2m views

Minute 90+4 and Aguero became immortalised at the Etihad for one of the most dramatic moments in Premier League history to clinch the title.

9. Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid vs Bayer Leverkusen (2002) – 3.3m

The pirouette goal which best shone a light on the majestic nature of Zizou, one of the most elegant players who consistently performed on the big stage.

8. Wayne Rooney, Man United vs Man City (2011) – 3.8m

A blockbuster effort to spark absolute pandemonium in the fierce Manchester derby. Unforgettable.

7. Lionel Messi, Barcelona vs Bayern Munich (2015) – 4.8m

Poor Jerome Boateng, never to be seen again after Messi dropped him to the turf in a sensational dribble into the box, before a delicate, looping effort deceived the best goalkeeper in the world Manuel Neuer.

6. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Sweden vs England (2012) – 7.5m

The spectacular Swede relished the opportunity to silence some of his biggest critics in England after some lean years against English clubs in the Champions League; the imagination, athleticism and immaculate technique makes this one of the most rewatchable goals of all time.

5. Lionel Messi, Barcelona vs Getafe (2007) – 8.5m

The original Messi goal that fully justified the Diego Maradona comparisons due to the similarity with his goal against England. Nobody could touch him then and very few can now 13 years later.

4. Diego Maradona, Argentina vs England (1986) – 9.1m

If Maradona also scored a more impressive goal in this game, he took more satisfaction from the cleverness to deceive the onrushing Peter Shilton, who still remains bitter to this day.

3. David Beckham, England vs Greece (2001) – 15.1m

The iconic Beckham moment, you just knew he would do it, you can see him drinking it all in before swiping the ball towards that top corner. Epic.

2. Roberto Carlos, Brazil vs France (1997) – 24.5m

The free-kick that revolutionised the art, nothing on the pitch was ever looked at with quite as much scepticism again. Audacious.

1. Lionel Messi, Barcelona vs Real Madrid (2017) – 40m

How do you further enhance an already legendary reputation? Bring your eternal rivals to their knees with a stoppage time winner that appeared inevitable as soon as the ball was cut back into his path. The Bernabeu will not rest easy until they see the back of the little genius.
