The Netherlands and Germany maintained their monopoly on the men's European Junior Championship as the Dutch beat their arch rivals 3-2 here to retain their title. Both countries have now secured the championship four times.

England won a penalty shoot-out 4-2 against Spain to take the bronze medal after the teams had been locked in a 2-2 draw at the end of extra time.

Several players are likely to feature prominently in the notebook of the watching England and Great Britain manager, David Whittle, none more so than the captain, Brett Garrard. He led his team back with skill and determination after their shattering defeat by Germany in the semi-final where they went down to hockey's first "golden goal" in a championship.

Against the Spanish, England were always in command after Keith Reesby gave them the lead in the eighth minute. Although Spain equalised after Mark Pearn had put England ahead for the second time from the penalty spot, it would have been an injustice had England not taken the bronze. Fittingly, Garrard converted the winning stroke.
