Hyvon Ngetich's body gave up with just 50m remaining when she was leading the Austin marathon on Sunday, but the determined Kenyan runner crawled to the finish line in dramatic scenes (watch below) and still ended up in third place.

The exhausted 29-year-old collapsed after 23 gruelling miles, but she refused the wheelchair that was offered, and dragged herself over the line.

Both the officials and the medical staff refrained from assisting Ngetich as she would have been disqualified had they intervened.

"For the last two kilometres, I don't remember. Finish line, I don't remember," the brave runner, who eventually finished with a time of three hours and four minutes said aferwards.

"Running, always you have to keep going."
