Olympics: Muehlegg in positive drug test
Johann Muehlegg, a cross-country skier from Spain who has won three gold medals at the Winter Olympics, has tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug similar to the banned blood-boosting agent, erythropoietin (EPO).
A random urine test on Thursday found traces of dar-bepoetin in the German-born skier, who won golds in the 30km freestyle, 50km classical cross-country and combined pursuit. Results from a second test were expected late yesterday.
It was not clear whether Muehlegg will be stripped of his medals or suspended. He was called before the International Olympic Committee's disciplinary panel yesterday, along with Spanish Olympic officials and the team doctor.
Darbepoetin is used to treat anaemia by boosting the production of red blood cells. Since it is relatively new, it is not on the IOC's list of banned substances, though it has similar properties to EPO.
Two other unnamed athletes also tested positive, according to the IOC, though their names were not expected to be released yesterday.
