Cycling: World gold for Kenny as Bauge loses title after drugs ban

Olympic gold medallist Jason Kenny has gained his first ever senior World Championships title after Frenchman Grégory Baugé had his results annulled for anti-doping rule violations.

Baugé was awarded a one-year backdated suspension running through most of 2011 after a double infringement of the anti-doping administration and management system, used to establish athletes' whereabouts for testing, as well as one missed anti-doping test.

As a result Kenny, 23, moves up from second to take gold in the 2011 World Championships sprint event, while his British team-mate Sir Chris Hoy is upgraded from bronze to silver. A gold medallist in the team sprint in the Beijing Olympics, Kenny said: "While it's an honour to get the title, I would have preferred to achieve it under different circumstances."

Ironically, the news broke on the same day that British World Road Champion and Tour de France green jersey holder Mark Cavendish confirmed he missed an out-of-competition anti-doping test last April.

"It was a simple, genuine administrative error," Cavendish, who was with a BBC film crew on Mount Etna filming for the upcoming Giro d'Italia at the time of the missed test, said."Of course I totally understand the importance of testing in sport. It's part of the job and it's my job to make sure I don't miss another."

Cavendish will not face any disciplinary action, which only takes place when an athlete misses three such tests in 18 months.
