The sporting week ahead (25 August 2013)

Today

Alastair Cook will deservedly raise the urn at the Oval as the Ashes series concludes. But don't worry; it begins all over again Down Under in just three months. When Manchester City last played a League match in Cardiff nearly 29 years ago they ran out 3-0 winners. It would be hard to bet against the same result today. A refreshed Formula One road show starts again at the refreshing-sounding Spa with the Belgian Grand Prix, the first race after the four-week summer break.

In a series far more delicately poised than the men's was, the final ODI of the revamped Women's Ashes series starts in Hove, the teams currently level on four points each.

Tomorrow

Just two weeks in and one of the anticipated fixtures of the Premier League season is here already – David Moyes takes on Jose Mourinho as Manchester United face Chelsea at Old Trafford. Andy Murray will hope to become King of New York again. He starts the defence of his US Open title with a first-round match against Michael Llodra.

Tuesday

With Arsenal 3-0 up from the first leg in Istanbul, the pressure will be off Arsène Wenger as the Gunners take on Fenerbahce in the Champions' League qualifier return leg at the Emirates. He may even have some spare time in the dugout to work on a few transfers. Two more points up for grabs in the Women's Ashes series with a T20 contest in Chelmsford.

Wednesday

Celtic will have to overcome a 2-0 deficit at Celtic Park to stop Shakhter Karagandy becoming the first Kazak side to reach the Champions' League group stage.

Thursday

The draw for that Champions' League group stage takes place. In Europa League qualifiers, Tottenham and Swansea look odds on to go through such is the size of their first-leg leads. The first England v Australia men's T20 is at Hampshire's Ageas Bowl, with the second Women's Ashes T20 beforehand.

Friday

The Europa League group stage draw takes place – but will we all be as interested as AVB? Chelsea play Bayern Munich in the European Super Cup in Prague – the first time it has not been played in Monaco since 1998.

Saturday

Hull face a daunting League trip to the Etihad Stadium, where Man City have scored in their last 51 League matches. At Selhurst Park eyes and ears will be fixed on the gaffers as Ian Holloway's Crystal Palace and Paolo Di Canio's Sunderland meet. The second England v Australia men's T20 is at Durham preceded by the third T20 of the Women's Ashes series.
