Round-Up: Salford earn last City victory as Broncos secure rare win

Salford played their last game as the City Reds before this week’s planned rebranding as the Red Devils at Castleford. Apart from the name change, the club will announce a series of new faces to go with scrum-half, Tim Smith, signed from Wakefield for “a substantial fee.”

At The Jungle yesterday, they faced Rangi Chase, who is expected to be one of them. Justin Carney and Jodie Broughton both scored hat-tricks as the Tigers won 44-30.

London Broncos led at half-time against Bradford and Jamie Soward scored a second half try and set up David Howell’s second as Super League’s bottom club won 20-10. Widnes romped into a 24-point lead against Hull KR, with tries from Kevin Brown, Adam Lawton, Rhys Hanbury and Joe Mellor. Rovers fought back, with David Hodgson’s hat-trick of tries, but the Vikings won 36-22.

Earlier this weekend the champions, Leeds, came within striking distance of Wigan in third. They beat the Catalan Dragons 20-12 to draw level with the Warriors, who lost a thrilling Challenge Cup final rematch 34-33 to Hull.

Wigan’s young reserves looked to have done enough, but were pipped by two late Daniel Holdsworth drop-goals. Sam Powell had only just put the Warriors back in front with a similar one-pointer.

Wigan now play Leeds on Thursday in the match that will decide third position going into the play-offs. Warrington won 29-16 at St Helens to keep their grip on second place.
