Schwer is sent home after scan

Billy Schwer has been released from hospital after spending two nights under observation following his defeat to Argentina's Pablo Sarmiento at Wembley Conference Centre on Saturday night.

The Luton fighter was stopped in the 11th round of his International Boxing Organisation light-welterweight contest with Sarmiento and was later admitted to the Royal Free Hospital in north London. He was given a brain scan, which proved negative, but was nevertheless kept in for observation as a precaution and was released after being given the all-clear by doctors yesterday afternoon.

The 32-year-old's father, Billy Snr, confirmed his son would never fight again following the latest punishing bout of a career in which he has taken his body to the limits.

Eleven more hard rounds against Sarmiento meant that Schwer had fought 47 bruising rounds in the space of 20 months, 35 in the last nine months. "Age and all the hard fights caught up with Billy on Saturday night," admitted Schwer's father.

"I'm glad that Pablo Sarmiento was not a chilling puncher who could have knocked Billy's head off. A year ago Sarmiento would not have laced Billy's gloves."
