The Masters: The golfing world gets set for tournament final

Patrick Reed held off the challenge of Ryder Cup team-mates Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth to claim his first major title in the Masters, as Rory McIlroy suffered more Masters misery.

Reed carded a final round of 71 at Augusta National to finish 15 under par and a shot ahead of Fowler, with 2015 champion Spieth another stroke back after an astonishing challenge faltered at the last.

Spieth had rallied from nine shots behind at the start of the day to claim a share of the lead with his ninth birdie of the day on the 16th, setting up the chance to equal the course record of 63 or even match the major championship mark of 62.

But a terrible drive on the 18th for the second time this week led to a crucial bogey and more Augusta demons, after he squandered a five-shot lead with nine to play in 2016 in defence of his title.

Rickie Fowler (-12) and Jon Rahm (-11)Rahm produces a lovely approach to the par-five 13th green, but his eagle effort is agonisingly short. he leaves with a birdie but knows it's not enough. Fowler has struggled his way to the green, meaning he only has a birdie effort, but he duly takes it and move to within two of the lead.

Justin Thomas (-5) and Jordan Spieth (-14)We have a new co-leader! Jordan Spieth birdies the 16th with a spectacular putt from down the hill, and he moves into a share of the lead alongside his Ryder Cup colleague.

Patrick Reed (-14) and Rory McIlroy (-10)Reed gets a huge slice of luck when he undercooks his approach on the 13th and looks to go in the water, only for the ball to stop on the bank. He still has a chance for a birdie though, but it comes up short and he can only manage the par, and McIlroy, after a good shot out of the first-cut, messes up his eagle putt. he takes birdie though to get back to 10-under.

Patrick Reed (-15) and Rory McIlroy (-8)This is really important. Reed converts a nice approach on 14 and comes away with a birdie to move to 15-under for the first time today. McIlroy misses his, as well as the par putt, and at eight-under he is down and out of this. But the important bit is up ahead...

Justin Thomas (-6) and Jordan Spieth (-14)As Spieth has missed his birdie putt on 17, and as he leaves with a par to the 18th tee, he needs to ideally birdie the last to put the pressure on Partick Reed.

Rickie Fowler (-13) and Jon Rahm (-11)That's the end of Rahm's challenge as he finds the wet stuff at 15. We're down to three, and Fowler just rolls his eagle putt on the same hole wide, but a birdie is still on the line. Rahm ends up with a bogey, which puts paid to his chances really.

Patrick Reed (-15) and Rory McIlroy (-8)Both Reed and McIlroy drive left on the 15th, meaning they can't really go for the green on the par-five and as such lay-up through the trees to limit themselves to birdie attempts.

Justin Thomas (-5) and Jordan Spieth (-14)On 18, Spieth drives straight into the the trees on the left and has 267 yards to go between himself and the green. His second lays-up, and his third is a beauty that spins back from the flag and gives him a shot at par that could give him a hope of winning this, or taking it to a play-off at least.

Patrick Reed (-15) and Rory McIlroy (-8)Reed can't get the birdie putt from the fringe, but rolls it in close enough to give himself a shot at par. McIlroy follow suit, and his day really has been a disappointing one. Reed putts out for par, as does McIlroy.

Justin Thomas (-5) and Jordan Spieth (-13)But Spieth misses the par putt! He slips to 13-under, and surely this is now Reed's to lose!

Rickie Fowler (-13) and Jon Rahm (-11)Fowler hits into the bunker on the par-three 16th, but it's a beautiful chip out and he saves par superbly. He needs birdies on 17 and 18 though to tie with Reed if his compatriot goes through to par, so maybe it's not over yet.
