Masters 2019: Justin Thomas reveals Augusta strategy in pursuit of Green Jacket

The American has improved with every year he has played the tournament and believes it could be his year

Justin Thomas will abandon his cautious approach to Augusta National as he seeks a second major title in The 83rd Masters.

Thomas won the US PGA Championship in 2017 but was disappointed with his results in the majors last year, despite a highly respectable share of sixth place in his title defence at Bellerive.

The former world number one has been analysing what he needs to do to improve with his father and coach Mike and, when it comes to Augusta, believes he may have figured it out.

"I feel like my game sets up for majors very well," Thomas said. "I've had a couple of good majors but as a whole I would say I have very, very highly underperformed versus what I feel like I should have and that's what we're trying to figure out.

"If it's me, if it's someone else, if I'm putting too much work in, if my mental game is off, if I'm pressing too hard, if I'm being too aggressive or whatever it is. Especially at this place, we feel I'm over cautious.

"I'm playing too conservatively. That being said, I'm not going to be going at every pin and doing everything I can to try to birdie every hole, but it's almost like I have an eight iron in my hands and I'm like, oh, I can't miss over there, I'm going to hit it to 30 feet.

"If I have an eight iron in my hand and I'm hitting it well I'm probably going to hit it to inside 10 feet, so why am I not going at this pin?

If it's the Sony Open I would be going at the pin, why all of a sudden since it's the Masters am I going to be aiming trying to make par?

"You obviously have to pick your spots and understand when it's smart and when you can play aggressive versus conservative, but as a whole I think that we've figured out that I maybe am over-respecting the golf course."
