Record-equalling performance puts Dustin Johnson in control at Augusta

Tiger Woods was already out of Masters contention on Sunday by the time he reached the 12th hole, but at the scene of where his 2019 championship hopes came alive 18 months ago, he suffered one of his biggest Augusta National meltdowns of his career.

The 15-time major champion proved even he is capable of losing his head when the pressure was one, with Augusta’s famous 12th hole claiming yet another victim.

Last year, Woods proved one of the very few frontrunners who found the green off the 12th tee as his opponents crumbled around him, with Tony Finau, Francesco Molinari, Brooks Koepka and Ian Poulter all finding the water in Rae’s Creek.

But this time around it was Woods who was left to fume as he visited the infamous water hazard not once, not twice, but three barely believable times on the 12th hole, undoing his fourth and final round with a seven-over-par 10 - the worst score he has ever recorded on a hole at the Masters.

After taking a drop following his errant tee shot, the 44-year-old chipped onto the green, only to spin the ball back off it and into Rae’s Creek for the second time in quick succession, forcing another drop on the 158-yard par-three.

Facing his fifth shot, Woods chipped over the green and into a bunker, only to hit his sixth back into the drink, much to his internal anger. To make matters worse, Woods grimaced as he made his way out of the bunker in a very awkward matter that suggested Saturday’s double-round had taken its toll on his body.

A third drop of the hole saw Woods finally chip out of the bunker and onto the fringe, with the golfing great unable to safe single figures as be pushed his putt left of the hole, recording a 10 and quickly turning a two-over-par round into nine-over and plummeting himself down the leaderboard from a share of 30th to tied-57th on four-over.

It proved his worst ever score at Augusta in 22 championship appearances, beating his previous worst which proved an eight on the par-five 15th hole.

But what’s the sign of a true champion? The ability to bounce back immediately, with Woods following up with a birdie at the 13th after narrowly missing out on an eagle putt to get his round moving back in the right direction.
