Hockey: Cannock's victory relief for casual Edwards

Cannock, after an absence of three weeks, returned to the top of the Premier League after their 4-3 away win against Teddington.

Victory brought a sigh of relief from Cannock's Welsh defender Paul Edwards. He had gifted the first of Phil McGuire's three goals for Teddington and then casually lobbed a penalty stroke over the bar on half-time.

The overnight leaders Old Loughtonians came unstuck at home to East Grinstead, dropping points in a 3-3 draw. Peter Bell sank a penalty corner in the 69th minute when the Old Boys had been reduced to nine men after temporary suspensions to the internationals Matt Sutton and Nick Thompson. At Guildford, Danny Hall struck three times to collect a 5-3 over Reading, and Mike Huckle also scored three times in Beeston's 5-0 win against Sheffield to keep them five points clear in the First Division.

Slough, 6-1 winners away to Sutton Canada Life, maintained their three- point lead at the top of the Women's National table.
