Follow the latest updates live from the Italian Grand Prix at Monza where Lewis Hamilton will attempt to make it six wins from eight this season as he starts from pole position.

The six-time world champion is bidding to match Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of seven titles, and a victory today will take him a giant step closer towards achieving that honour, with the Mercedes driver already holding a 47-point advantage in the standings. He is also just two race wins away from Schumacher’s tally of 91 career victories, and should he triumph today, he could end up equalling that record next weekend.

His Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas starts alongside him on the front row, but Hamilton’s nearest challenger in Max Verstappen will only start in fifth after the Red Bull qualified behind Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez, leaving the Dutchman with plenty of work to do if he is to secure a podium finish on the high-speed track. Follow the live updates below.

Lap 8

The stewards have hit Alex Albon with a five-second penalty, with the Red Bull driver judged to have not left a car-width gap at the start of the race. Albon made contact with Gasly, which momentarily got him airborne and sent the Red Bull across the chicane to drop him down to 14th.

Lap 6

A big moment for Vettel! He’s battling with Russell, and as the Williams pulls alongside the Ferrari, Vettel suddenly goes straight on. He has a huge brake failure, with the left-rear on fire and the brake line exploding, and he smashes through the polystyrene boards at Turn One before slowing down and heading back to the pits at a snail’s pace. That will be the end of his grand prix, sadly.

Lap 4

Hamilton has a 2.5s lead over Sainz and is well out of DRS range, and with his championship rivals struggling massively this afternoon, it could be a dream day for the Mercedes driver. Bottas meanwhile gets the message that  they will run long, so the Finn has to make sure he looks after his tyres.

Lap 3

Bottas believes he has an issue - “puncture, puncture or something” - but the message back from the team is that everything is ok and the car is not damaged. There was slight contact between Bottas and Norris twice, but the McLaren driver remained committed to pass Bottas around the outside of the second chicane. Verstappen meanwhile is trying to rebuild, and he gets past Stroll into turns one and two to re-take seventh.

Lap 2

Bottas simply could not get back on line, and it meant that after Norris forced his way through, Perez and Ricciardo were able to do the same. Verstappen has also had a nightmare start, with Norris, Ricciardo and Stroll all forcing their way past to relegate him to eighth.

Lap 1

What a start from Lando Norris! The McLaren driver goes from sixth to third and he pushes Bottas out of his way as the Mercedes driver plummets. Hamilton gets away sweet as a nut from the lead, but Bottas is swamped by Sainz and Norris comes charging through to follow his teammate, meaning McLaren are running second and third!
