F1 preview: A lap of the Spanish Grand Prix

Follow the latest updates live from the Spanish Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton starts from pole position in his Formula One championship battle with Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen, who is bidding for his second consecutive victory.

It was Verstappen who dominated at Silverstone last weekend to take Red Bull’s first win of the season, and with Mercedes concerned that the tyre issues that struck them at the two British rounds will reappear in Barcelona, he is best placed to challenge Hamilton as he starts third on the grid behind Bottas.

Verstappen is Hamilton’s nearest challenger in the championship standings with a 30-point margin at the top of the table, and another Red Bull win would really open up the title battle. Behind Verstappen, the returning Sergio Perez leads a Racing Point one-two with Lance Stroll, with Alex Albon sixth and the two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel disappointing once again in ninth and 11th. The Spanish Grand Prix takes place across 14 - 16 August 2020.

All European races will be held behind closed doors, meaning that the only way fans will be able to see the action is on television.

In the UK, Sky Sports continue to hold the exclusive rights for F1, with Channel 4 only able to show the British Grand Prix live as they are restricted to highlights coverage the rest of the year.

Lap 25: Verstappen gets as close to a telling off as you can get while racing at 180mph, as he tells the team to stop focussing on Hamilton and Bottas and start running their own race.

Lap 27: Mercedes have of course changed their livery and overalls this season to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement, but they do have something of a side effect.

"These black overalls are f****** hot," Bottas reports on the radio.

Lap 28: Magnussen's tyres are destroyed and he's a sitting duck, as Ocon, Albon and Sainz all manage to get past from Turn One to Turn Four, and the Haas driver unsurprisingly puts at the end of the lap for new boots.

Stroll has stopped from fourth, and gets out in front of the squabbling midfield pack in eighth.

Lap 29: Perez pits from fourth place, and his slower pace in going longer sees Sainz manage to work his way past just as he also overtakes Ocon on the finish straight, moving the McLaren up to sixth and splitting the Racing Points. Sainz does have to stop again, but Perez shouldn't need too long to get past if we're honest.

Lap 32: As predicted, Perez flies past Sainz after just a lap and moves up to sixth, and he's right on the back of his teammate in the battle for fifth, which should turn to fourth when Ricciardo pits.

Lap 34: Ocon, Norris and Leclerc are having a mighty battle for 10th, and as Norris tries to attack the Renault, Leclerc sees his chance and tries everything he can to get Norris. They remain in line but the action is frantic.
