Oksana Baiul, the Olympic and former world figure skating champion who was charged with drunk and reckless driving when her Mercedes left the road last month, was yesterday granted leave to enter an alcohol education programme. If Baiul, of Hartford, Connecticut, completes the programme and performs 25 hours of community service, the drunk driving charge will be dropped. The offence of reckless driving was reduced to travelling unreasonably fast and Baiul was fined $90 (pounds 57).
