Rio 2016 Olympic medal table: Latest results as Team GB target 48 medals
Latest medal table from Rio 2016
Team GB have set themselves the ambitious target of 48 medals at the Rio Olympic Games, the most they have ever achieved at a tournament on foreign soil, as they look to beat their haul of 47 at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
While they do not expect to beat the record haul of 65 medals – including 29 gold medals – from London 2012, the feat would still represent Britain’s best performance overseas.
However, Team GB’s last performance across the Atlantic provides cause for concern, given the Atlanta 1996 Games brought just one gold and 36th overall place in the medal table.
Rivalling Team GB will be the usual suspects of the United States, China and Australia, although Olympic heavyweights Russia are likely to face their smallest return for some time due to the bans that have been imposed on a number of their athletes over anti-doping violation allegations.
