Three who made it

Commander In Chief: Unraced at two, won his maiden at the 1993 Craven, beat subsequent Oaks third Oakmead and Derby runner-up Blue Judge at the Guineas meeting and outshone stable-mate Tenby (who started odds-on at Epsom) on the gallops before winning the Derby and Irish Derby. (Trained: H Cecil)

Shaamit: Won maiden impressively as two-year-old and then suffered an abcess on his shoulder. Entered for the 1996 Derby at supplementary stage and became the second horse in succession to win it on seasonal debut. (W Haggas)

Entrepreneur: A 600,000gns yearling star before he made the racecourse. Won two out of three as a juvenile, though did not take on the best, but won last year's 2,000 Guineas on his first venture into Group company. He did justify the hype that far, but then failed at odds-on in the Derby. (M Stoute)

THREE WHO DIDN'T

Razeen: A son of Northern Dancer, unraced at two, who started favourite for the 1990 Derby on the strength of his three successive wins before Epsom. Finished a miserable 14th of 18 there, subsequently operated on for a breathing infirmity. (H Cecil)

Alnasr Alwasheek: After a low-key first season won the 1992 Craven Stakes, started favourite for the 2,000 Guineas, finished ninth. Bounced back to take the Dante, started third favourite for the Derby, finished a well-beaten seventh, and did not trouble a judge again. (M Stoute)

Red Glow: A peacock of a horse who ran just once as a juvenile but started favourite for the 1988 Derby on the strength of his Dante Stakes victory. Finished a squiggly fourth at Epsom, was unplaced on his only subsequent run that year and was subsequently banished to New Zealand. (G Wragg)

Three who might

Fleetwood: Had a minor setback after winning his maiden at Haydock last year, a performance that was impressive both visually and by the clock. Should stay 10 furlongs like his sire Groom Dancer, and maybe further, his dam Up Anchor certainly did. (H Cecil)

Exclusive: A Polar Falcon half-sister to Entrepreneur. Another of Newmarket's poorly kept secrets this year, and she may prove to be the home side's best 1,000 Guineas defence against the Godolphin invaders from Dubai, Cape Verdi and Embassy. (M Stoute)

Zomaradah: A most likeable daughter of Deploy and a half-sister to Singspiel's sire In The Wings. She was fifth on her only appearance last year, and seems sure to do rather better this term over middle distances. She may prove to be an able understudy to her stable's main Oaks hope Glorosia.
