Visser seals Edinburgh's epic comeback

Edinburgh staged an amazing fightback at Murrayfield last night as they overcame French side Racing Metro 48-47 to make it two wins from two in Heineken Cup Pool Two.

The Scottish side, who also won by a point at London Irish last week, scored three late tries through Tom Brown, Roddy Grant and Tim Visser to recover from 20-31 down at half-time.

They started brightly and were two tries up inside the first 10 minutes, as Visser touched down in the first 60 seconds before club captain Greig Laidlaw went over in the eighth minute after both sides had landed penalties. Laidlaw converted both tries to put Edinburgh 17-3 to the good, but it went downhill rapidly from there as the visitors ran in five tries to take control.

In the second half, though, Edinburgh reasserted their early superiority as Netani Talei added a third try after the hour mark, but the game still looked beyond them until Brown and Grant went over in the latter stages and then Visser won it with four minutes to play, Laidlaw slotting his sixth conversion.

In last night's other Heineken Cup tie, Clermont Auvergne won 54-3 at home to Italian side Aironi in Pool Four. Wales full-back Lee Byrne opened the scoring and Australian fly-half Brock James was also among the eight try-scorers as the French side won at a canter.

In the Amlin Cup, Sale thrashed Spanish minnows La Vila 59-6 at Edgeley Park. A penalty try and then scores from Andy Powell and Andrew Higgins before half-time made the game safe, allowing the home side to open up in the second period as Luther Burrell, Cillian Willis, Richie Vernon all went over and Johnny Leota grabbed a hat-trick.
