England suffered a second consecutive defeat in the Six Nations as the 22-16 loss to France in Paris gifted Ireland the 2018 championship with a round to spare.

What's worse for England is that they face Joe Schmidt's triumphant side in their St Patrick's Day finale next Saturday, but they will first have to get over the disappointment of another loss after losing to France just a fortnight after suffering the same fate in Scotland.

England led early through two Owen Farrell penalties and a 53m effort from returning wing Elliot Daly, but Maxime Machenaud kicked three of his own to ensure that the scores were still level at the break.

Having lost Nathan Hughes, the Wasps No 8, to another left knee injury in the 24th minute, England lacked a real ball carrying threat and france punished them for it, scoring a penalty try in the 48th minute following a TMO review, which left referee Jaco Peyper in deciding thet he had no option than to send Anthony Watson to the sin-bin for a high tackle on opposite man Benjamin Fall and head under the posts to award the seven-pointer,

But England stayed in touch - even after another Machenaud penalty - with a well-worked try that saw Courtney Lawes crash the ball up before Farrell launched a flat pass out to Daly, who in turn flicked it delicately inside to fellow wing Jonny May to score and make it a three point game.

But LIonel Beauxis, the replacement fly-half, added on final penalty to seal the result that saw France record their first win over England since 2014 and hands Ireland the championship back with a game still in the bag.
