Rugby World Cup 2019 in numbers

The second round of the Rugby World Cup is in the bag, with England, South Africa and Wales all recording emphatic victories and Japan registering one of the great wins of all-time.

With New Zealand having the round off, a number of World Cup contenders were able to press their claims with what was their second matches of the campaign in Japan.

England continued their perfect start with a 45-7 victory over the United States, ensuring they take 10 points from 10 into their crucial game against Argentina and France – the former beating Tonga 28-12 to get their first win on the board.

Wales meanwhile held on to a 29-25 victory against Australia in what proved a World Cup thriller, putting them in pole position to top Pool D that also sees Georgia off the mark with their victory over Uruguay – who earlier in the week recorded a famous upset win over Fiji in Kamaishi.

However, if Ireland were hoping to build on their rout of Scotland and send out an emphatic statement, they failed as Japan recorded one of the great upsets four years after the famous ‘Miracle of Brighton’, putting the Brave Blossoms in control of Pool A and boosting their hopes of reaching the last eight for the first time.

So who makes our team of the round for the second batch of fixtures?

The team of round three will be unveiled at the weekend.
