Neil Jenkins kept Pontypridd firmly on course for the Celtic League quarter-finals by staging a goalkicking master-class in a 28-27 win over Borders in front of 4,600 spectators at Sardis Road last night.

Jenkins kicked 23 points as Ponty were given a fright after Borders outscored them 3-1 on tries through flanker Campbell Feather, wing Craig Moir and a classy Gregor Townsend solo effort. Flanker Michael Owen powered over from a driven lineout to score Ponty's try.

Newport lost 18-12 at the Galway Sportsground as Connacht maintained their 100 per cent league record. Shane Howarth kicked all Newport's points. Bridgend lost 47-11 to Glasgow at Hughenden.

Jonah Lomu has suffered another injury setback after sustaining a partial tear to the cruciate ligament in his knee. A scan confirmed the damage and the All Black wing will miss Wellington's National Provincial Championship game against Taranaki tomorrow.

The Wellington coach, Dave Rennie, is optimistic, however, that Lomu will be fit to return against Otago next Friday. Lomu has struggled for form this year, and was hardly used by the All Blacks during the Tri-Nations tournament. Since then he has failed to spark Wellington in the NPC and has scored only one try this year at all levels
