Swimming: Britain's bronze

KERRY SHACKLOCK, the 21- year-old from Camberley, collected her second bronze medal in two days in the synchronised swimming at the European Championships in Sheffield yesterday. Shacklock's double, after Sunday's duet with Laila Vakil and yesterday's success in the solo final, are Britain's first medals in this event since 1985.

Competing last of the eight finalists, Shacklock knew gold was out of reach after an elegant performance by the defending champion, Olga Sedakova, of Russia, but she finished third behind Marianne Aeschbacher, of France, and then used her moment in the spotlight to appeal for sponsorship for her sport.

Britain's women's water polo team put in a rousing start yesterday against Hungary, the defending champions. They led 6-4 at the end of the second quarter before Hungary stepped up to win 13-7.

Jan Hempel took the gold medal on the three-metre springboard yesterday to win Germany's third diving title.
