ATP World Tour Finals 2014: Novak Djokovic wastes little time in win over Stan Wawrinka

The Serb beat Swiss world No 4 6-3, 6-0 in just 65 minutes

Novak Djokovic’s campaign to become the first player to win three successive year-end titles since Ivan Lendl 27 years ago is gathering pace. The world No 1 crushed Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 6-0 in just 65 minutes in his second round-robin match of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena.

Djokovic, who had beaten Marin Cilic 6-1, 6-1 in 56 minutes two days earlier, won his 29th indoor match in succession despite making a slow start. After Wawrinka had won the first two games, Djokovic turned the contest around by winning 17 out of 18 points in the middle of the opening set. Wawrinka, who had thrashed Tomas Berdych in his previous match, had no answer as Djokovic produced a dazzling display of attacking tennis.

On Friday the Serb will play his final round-robin match against Berdych, who won only two games in their most recent meeting last month in Beijing, where he would have been on the wrong end of a “double bagel” scoreline if he had not saved a match point when trailing 6-0, 5-0.

Berdych boosted his own chances of reaching the semi-finals when he beat Cilic 6-3, 6-1. In his five appearances in this tournament the Czech has lost his first match and won his second on each occasion.
