Dokic in top 10 with third title

Jelena Dokic powered to her third title of the year at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow yesterday, upsetting the Russians by beating the local favourite Elena Dementieva, 6-3, 6-3.

She began this season title-less, but after successes at the Italian Open and the Princess Cup she has been knocking on the door of the world's top 10. Yesterday's win will put her in front of Nathalie Tauziat and into that élite group.

Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova salvaged some pride by teaming up to win the doubles final, handing out another defeat for Dementieva and her partner, Lina Krasnorutskaya, 7-6, 6-3, for their first doubles title this year.

Hingis and Kournikova resumed their doubles partnership after the Russian's comeback following a long-term foot injury which had kept her out of tennis for much of 2001. In Moscow, the Swiss top seed lost in straight sets to Dementieva in the quarter-finals while Kournikova slumped to a first-round defeat to her 17-year-old compatriot Galina Fokina.

In the men's event, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, of Russia, won for the fifth time in a row, beating the German Nicolas Kiefer 6-4, 7-5.

In Tokyo, Lleyton Hewitt's 6-4, 6-2 victory over Michel Kratochvil at the Japan Open gave him his fourth title of the year and extended his winning streak to 14 matches.

In the women's event, Monica Seles needed only 64 minutes to dispatch Tamarine Tanasugarn, of Thailand, 6-3, 6-2, for her second title in successive events and third of the year. It was the 50th title of Seles's career
