The heat and humidity of Miami will be a far cry from the indoor arena in Glasgow where they last met only three weeks ago, but it would be a major surprise if the result was any different.

Andy Murray faces Donald Young in the second round of the Miami Masters on Friday hoping to repeat his recent Davis Cup victory over the 25-year-old American, who has taken only one set off him in their last four meetings.

Young will be playing on home soil, but Murray knows the courts and conditions at Crandon Park as well as almost anyone. The world No 4 has a second home in Miami and does most of his training blocks there, practising on the tournament courts. He has won the tournament twice, in 2009 and 2013, and was also runner-up three years ago.

While Murray had a first-round bye, his opponent earned his place in the last 64 when Lu Yen-hsun retired before the end of their first set. Young has enjoyed a good start to the year. Last month the world No 44 reached the second final of his career, losing to Ivo Karlovic at Delray Beach. He has also reached the semi-finals in Memphis and the quarter-finals in Auckland.

If Murray lives up to his seeding he could go on to meet Santiago Giraldo in the third round, Kevin Anderson in the fourth, Stan Wawrinka in the quarter-finals and Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals. Novak Djokovic and Kei Nishikori are the top seeds in the other half of the draw.

With Nadal defending 600 ranking points as last year’s beaten finalist, Murray has the chance to reclaim the world No 3 position from the Spaniard at the end of the tournament.

In the women’s tournament Heather Watson faces Germany’s Angelique Kerber in her second-round match.
