Novak Djokovic struck the first significant blow of the clay-court season when he beat Rafael Nadal 6-3 6-3 in the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters.

The world No 1, who is aiming to claim his fourth Masters Series title in a row, will meet Tomas Berdych, a 6-1 6-4 winner over Gaël Monfils, in today’s final.

Djokovic has started the year in top form, having won titles in Melbourne, Indian Wells and Miami, and the victory over Nadal could be an important psychological boost as he attempts to win the French Open for the first time. Nadal, eight times a champion in Monte Carlo and the holder of nine French Open titles, has been struggling for form since last summer.

Nadal broke serve in the opening game, but once Djokovic (right) had broken back in the fourth, the Serb took charge. Another break gave Djokovic the chance to serve out for the first set.

Nadal was always struggling in the second set and was broken in the seventh game as Djokovic went on to complete his fifth victory in their last six meetings.

“Even when I was a break down in the first set I kept a winning mentality,” Djokovic said. “I stayed focused. I’m in great shape.”

Nadal, who hailed Djokovic as the best player in the world, said he had felt a little tired but was encouraged by his week’s work. “I hope this tournament is a key moment for my season,” he said. “By playing more matches like this, I will be confident enough to play.”

The Czech Republic and Russia both led 2-0 after the first day of their Fed Cup semi-finals against France and Germany respectively.
