Murray puts his feet up but still makes Miami progress

Andy Murray is through to the last 16 of the Miami Masters despite having played only one match in the tournament. The 24-year-old Scot, who beat Alejandro Falla in the second round after a first-round bye, was due to meet Canada's Milos Raonic last night but the world No 26 withdrew after suffering an ankle injury in practice.

Murray could yet make further progress without going on court. His fourth-round opponent will be France's Gilles Simon, who beat Jürgen Melzer 7-6, 6-4 but only after having lengthy on-court treatment for a back problem towards the end of the second set. Simon, the world No 13, has lost to Murray eight times in a row since winning their first match in Rome five years ago.

Tomas Berdych, a potential quarter-final opponent for Murray, went out of the tournament when he was beaten 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 by Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov, the world No 101. Dimitrov, aged 20, is a former world junior No 1 and has long been hailed as one of the game's emerging talents. He is coached by Patrick Mouratoglou. Rafael Nadal, seeded to meet Murray in the semi-finals, was facing Radek Stepanek last night.

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, the top seeds in the other half of the draw, successfully negotiated their opening matches on Saturday. Djokovic beat Baghdatis 6-4, 6-4, while Federer beat Ryan Harrison 6-2, 7-6 despite a remarkable incident in the second set.
