Wimbledon 2015: Andy Murray 'plays with more touch and feel' under female coach, says mother

Andy Murray is playing tennis with greater feel and sensitivity since the former Wimbledon champion took on a female coach, his mother Judy has claimed.

Amélie Mauresmo, who is expecting her first child in August but will return to coach Andy Murray during Wimbledon, has expanded her son’s range, Mrs Murray said.

“He is using his hand skills more and playing with greater feel and touch, which he always used to do, but maybe didn’t do so much when he worked with (former coach) Ivan Lendl because Ivan wasn’t that type of player,” Judy Murray told the Radio Times.

 

“He was more about being more aggressive more often, being physically and mentally tough and not losing your focus. Andy learnt loads from his time with Ivan and they achieved two grand slam titles together; now with Amélie he is playing in a slightly different way.”

Speaking ahead of Wimbledon, which begins on 29 June, she added: “Andy is used to having women in his tennis life. He has always been comfortable confiding in women about his emotions. And that ability to talk to women about his feelings – including those times when he might be afraid or angry or disappointed – has helped him to become the tennis player he is today.”

Murray credited Mauresmo, the French former Wimbledon ladies champion, with improving the variety of his game, after winning the Queen’s Club title on Sunday. The pair began working together a year ago.
