Wimbledon 2018: Five contenders to win

Wimbledon 2018 - day three: Order of play, prize money, how to get tickets, everything you need to know.

Today sees the second round begin at The Championships.

Serena Williams is in action on Centre Court, with Karolina Pliskova opening play against Victoria Azarenka. Carolina Wozniacki and Venus Williams are meanwhile in action on Court One, while Agnieszka Radwanska’s match against Lucie Safarova is not to be missed.

Roger Federer will of course be in action too – he takes on Lukas Lacko of Slovenia. Marin Cilic plays Guido Pella on Court One, with Andreas Seppi up against Kevin Anderson on Court Two.

British winners and losers from Wimbledon's first round  

The first round of Wimbledon is complete and it has been a mixed bag for Great Britain.

There were 11 players playing in their home grand slam, but only four survived to reach the last-64 stage.

Here, we take a look at Britain's winners and losers:

Winners

Katie Boulter: The 21-year-old won a grand slam match for the first time, achieving a three-set win over Veronica Cepede Royg.

Kyle Edmund: In his first Wimbledon as Britain's number one, Edmund eased to a routine win against Alex Bolt.

Johanna Konta: Hoping to match her run to last year's semi-final, Konta triumphed in a hard-fought encounter with Natalia Vikhlyantseva.

Katie Swan: Swan was perhaps the standout British story of the first round as the 19-year-old downed experienced Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu.

Losers

Liam Broady: Broady was given a tough draw and went down to 2016 finalist Milos Raonic in straight sets after a competitive opener.

Naomi Broady: It was a tough couple of days for the Broady family as Liam's sister Naomi was soundly beaten by reigning champion Garbine Muguruza on Centre Court.

Harriet Dart: The 21-year-old put in a spirited performance against Karolina Pliskova, taking a set off the former world number one before losing in three.

Katy Dunne: A late promotion to Centre Court on Tuesday evening saw Dunne put in a respectable showing, but she lost in straight sets to former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Cameron Norrie: The British number two came up against a former British number two in Aljaz Bedene, now playing for Slovenia, but lost in four sets.

Gabi Taylor: Taylor's first experience of the main draw at Wimbledon started badly against Eugenie Bouchard as she did not win a game in the first set, before the Canadian got the better of her in three sets.

Heather Watson: There was no repeat of last year's venture to round three as Watson went down in straight sets to Kirsten Flipkens.

The big talking points as Day 3 gets underway:

All eyes Swan one you, Katie

Katie Swan is the only Briton in action on Wednesday following her impressive first-round win over Irina-Camelia Begu. The 19-year-old introduced herself to the nation with a maiden grand slam success and she will be hoping to keep herself in the spotlight. She will have her work cut out against another Romanian in the shape of Mihaela Buzarnescu, who is ranked 28th in the world.

Being Serena

Serena Williams made her long-awaited Wimbledon comeback on Monday and got past Arantxa Rus without being at her best. She admitted to still getting her bearings after missing the tournament last year while pregnant, but she is returning to a place she knows like no other after being scheduled to play Viktoriya Tomova on Centre Court. She has not played there since the 2016 final and all eyes will be on how she pulls up for a second match in three days and whether it will be business as usual.

Federer's Centre Court residency

It is not surprising that Roger Federer is back on Centre Court. While most high-profile players generally play at least one game on Court One, Federer played exclusively on the main show court on his way to the 2017 title and his second-round clash against Lukas Lacko is also there. A bigger question might be who will be the next person to take a set off him at Wimbledon after winning his last eight matches here without dropping one.

The battle of the former world number ones

There is a spicy-looking encounter to open up proceedings on Centre as former world number ones Karolina Pliskova and Victoria Azarenka battle it out. It is sure to be a high-calibre second-round clash as seventh seed Pliskova is plotting to win her first grand slam title while Azarenka, who has not been a full-time player on the tour since the birth of her son, aims to get back to the top of the game. Expect lots of winners.

Roger Federer and Serena Williams are both back on Centre Court at Wimbledon on Wednesday as they look to advance to the third round. 

Federer will play Lukas Lacko of Slovakia as he continues his quest for a record-extending ninth title at the All England Club. Williams then faces Bulgarian qualifier Viktoriya Tomova as she goes for a 16th straight match win at the tournament — having missed last year while pregnant. 

Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki and last year's men's runner-up, Marin Cilic, are also back in action as they try to avoid more upsets at the tournament. Three of the top-10 seeded men lost in the first round, while former champions Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova also went out on Tuesday. 

The forecast calls for more sunny skies, although there is a 30 percent chance of rain showers in the afternoon.

A reminder that young British hopeful Katie Swan is in action against Mihaela Buzarnescu over on No.3 Court. The teenager impressed in her first-round match but is certainly finding the going a little tougher today. She’s 3-0 down in the first set, having being immediately broken by her Romanian opponent.
