Legendary NFL coach Don Shula has passed away at the age of 90, it has been confirmed.

The former Miami Dolphins head coach won more games than any other in professional American football history and famously guided the 1972 Phins to the only unbeaten season in NFL history.

The Dolphins confirmed the news on Monday.

“Don Shula was the patriarch of the Miami Dolphins for 50 years,” a statement read. “He brought the winning edge to our franchise and put the Dolphins and the city of Miami in the national sports scene.

“Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Mary Anne along with his children Dave, Donna, Sharon, Anne and Mike.”

Shula won an NFL-record 347 games including the playoffs including two Super Bowls.

By the time of his retirement in 1995, Shula had been a coach for 33 years and walked away from the game as one of only two coaches – along with Chicago Bears legend George Halas – to have coached more than 300 wins.

He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
