Enjoy more power and versatility from a thinner, lighter laptop

Upgrade and discover how a faster, sleeker model can work for you

Thursday 05 July 2018 13:22 BST

Convenience, power and portability are just some of the many benefits of your laptop. But if it’s more than a couple of years old, you might be surprised just how much more a new model can offer.

The average laptop is lighter than ever, and has become thinner and smaller, too. The casing has shrunk while the screen has stayed the same size — it just squeezes out to the edges more.

Many new laptops replace old, slow, bulky hard drives with fast, thin SSD (solid state) storage, saving weight and space. They’re more durable, too.

There have also been innovative changes to a laptop’s structure thanks to the emergence of the 2-in-1. This means a device that combines the strengths of both a traditional computer and a tablet.

Touchscreen display

While there’s a physical keyboard for fast, comfortable typing, it also comes with a touchscreen display, and you can flip the keys round to the back, thanks to a 360-degree hinge — meaning it’s just turned into a tablet. Some 2-in-1s even come with a dedicated pen so you can write directly on the display like it’s a notepad.

The versatility doesn’t end there. You can prop up a 2-in-1 in a tent position, which makes it ideal for viewing video — and you may find the screen resolution is much higher than your older laptop, too.

Stylish design

The Lenovo YOGA 520 is a 2-in-1 that redefines the word sleek — it’s less than 2cm thick when closed. It has a 14-inch HD display with tiny bezels on two sides (just 7.6mm).

There are speakers from audio company Harman Kardon, and a slim, fast SSD storage drive. Battery life is more than you might expect, too: up to seven hours. There’s even a fingerprint sensor on the keyboard so you don’t need a password to unlock it — which is about as far as you can get in terms of convenience.

That’s a serious amount packed in to something so thin and lightweight.
