Nintendo celebrates Pokemon's 20th birthday with new 3DS bundle and much more

In order to celebrate Pokemon's 20th birthday (apologies if that makes you feel old), Nintendo are releasing a brand new Pokemon-themed 3DS bundle.

The new edition of Nintendo's popular 3DS handheld console will come pre-loaded with the very first versions of the game, Pokemon Red and Blue, and is due for release on 27 February - 20 years to the day since the original games came out.

On top of this, the new 3DS version will have some nifty Pokemon designs on the included faceplates, featuring pictures of Charizard and Blastoise, which should make it easier for you to broadcast your love of Pokemon to people on public transport.

The company is also going to release some similarly-branded new versions of the 2DS, which will also come bundled with early versions of the game.

There's been plenty of new Pokemon games released since 1996, but for some people, they've failed to live up to the nostalgic charm of the original versions.

To their credit, Nintendo have left the pre-loaded games totally untouched, although now players can trade Pokemon wirelessly rather than having to rely on the elusive Gameboy link cable.

As if that's not enough, this 20th year is going to be littered with various other celebrations - including the re-releases of a number of the Pokemon films online and on Blu-Ray and DVD, the re-release of a bunch of sought-after Pokemon amiibo, and the release of the augmented reality mobile game Pokemon Go.

For young fans of the series, or for twenty-and-thirtysomethings looking to regain their youth, 2016 is going to be a big year.
