PS5 Launch – Play Has No Limits

The PS5 has finally gone on sale in the UK – to the select few who can get hold of one.

The console was released in the US and some other select countries last week, but has finally had its global launch on Thursday.

The day will be marked by fans receiving deliveries of their new PlayStations. But it will also be a day on which those many people who were not lucky enough to be able to secure a pre-order will be poring through the listings from shops such as Amazon, Curry’s and other retailers in an attempt to find in-stock consoles.

Here is all the latest on the release of the console.

Amazon UK PS5 stock may have appeared at 1pm

A couple of people are reporting to me on Twitter that they managed to get hold of Amazon PS5s at around 1pm. It may be that stock appeared at that moment. (It’s gone now.)

Amazon listings seem to appear unexpectedly

The Amazon Germany phenomenon that I just described is an example of something that’s happening more generally: consoles appear to be added to the site somewhat unpredictably, with no particular schedule or warning.

Other people have reported just scrolling on the website and seeing availability appear, even on the UK version.

I am absolutely not advising that you just keep refreshing Amazon’s listing page, waiting for that dismal “currently unavailable” mission to change and being ready to leap on any PS5s that come up. In my opinion that way madness and frustration lies. But if you do want to, you can find it here.

Amazon Germany console has disappeared

It is still actually showing as in-stock, but if you try and add it to your cart (or your Einkaufswagen), then it will vanish.

That brief moment of excitement is over. Back to refreshing!

Amazon Germany seems to have one console

It’s showing the normal PlayStation 5 – not the digital one – as available. Link here.

Latest stock status and links

You can find links to UK retailers who are (not) offering the PS5 here, along with the latest information on whether they've got stock coming and when it might appear.

Amazon briefly shows console as ‘in stock’

Some customers are seeing the PS5 appear on Amazon, but then find themselves unable to buy it. The Independent’s own Adam Hamdani, who has been desperately trying to buy one, saw a message saying it was available and would arrive next week:

(Amazon)

But when he actually tried to buy it, it just came up with the error page that we reported earlier. “We’re sorry, an error occurred when we tried to process your request,” and so on.

Now he says the basket is empty again.

‘Pre-orders’ appear at Game

A huge array of different options have just appeared on Game’s website. Notably, these are pre-orders, and won’t mean you’ll actually get the console straight away.

On that page you’ll find bundles that include the console, games and accessories. A lot of the bundles also seem to come with shirts, if you want that.

Game says that with these pre-orders, you can pay for “Priority Insured delivery”, which should mean that if they’re ordered today they will be delivered by 5 December – but that will cost you £20. All other orders will come by 10 December, it says.

You’ll also have to make your way through a queue. Clicking on it now, it says you’ll be waiting for more than an hour.

Amazon Germany becomes unlikely target as UK customers left frustrated

The Germany version of Amazon’s website became hugely popular over the morning as UK fans hoped they could find the console in-stock there, if not on their own country’s version.

Amazon comes back – with no PlayStations left

Some people can get back on the listing page but it says once again that it’s “currently available”.

Not clear yet whether that means all the consoles went during the brief blackout, or if there are any left.

Amazon crashes as 12pm restock arrives

It’s noon but you can’t buy the PS5 from Amazon. The website has broken.

(The rest of Amazon is working; unlike John Lewis and others, it seems to be only the PS5 listing that has broken.)

“An error occurred when we tried to process your request,” an error page reads."We're working on the problem and expect to resolve it shortly. Please note that if you were trying to place an order, it will not have been processed at this time. Please try again later."
