The Plate

As the name suggests, this South Beach restaurant specialises in a mix of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisine. That's not as weird as it sounds: a house speciality is seviche, raw fish "cooked" in citrus juice. This dish (more usually known as ceviche) is a form of sushi by another name.

The assortment of four seviches - yellowtail with ginger, garlic and soy, lobster with mango and lime, tuna with grapefruit, red jalapeños and almonds and salmon with guava, carrot and mojito sauce - is a good place to start. From there you can go Latin with grilled steaks and chimichurri (a parsley and garlic sauce) or stick with Asia and plump for sushi rolls.

Don't expect anything too traditional. The "Rainbow Dragon" sushi rolls are a mix of freshwater eel, red-bell pepper, cucumber, mango and avocado. The only things served straight up are the cocktails, from Caipirinhas to the shochu-based Chu-cumber.

The view

The food is only part of the reason to come here. The concept really took off after the New York original featured as a regular Sex and the City haunt. Now bringing the idea to the masses, SUSHISAMBA dromo is one of a chain of six restaurants, spread throughout the States and, er, Tel Aviv.

Inside diners eat to the sounds of a DJ beneath a light that looks like the inside of a Malteser. Outside you can watch the Miami in-crowd go by; with its chic boutiques, pedestrianised Lincoln Road is as much of a posers' paradise as South Beach.

The Bill

Expect to pay around $40 (£23.50) per person for three courses, excluding wine and coffee. Wines start at $20 (£12), or there's a separate sake menu. During September's Miami Spice event you can book a set, three-course dinner for $30 (£17.50) per person.
