OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

A good choice if you're driving, the hotel sits beside the Chester ring road on the northeastern edge of the city, with plenty of on-site parking and easy access to the nearby M56, M53 and North Wales Expressway. A public bus runs to the city centre and station or it's ten minutes by cab. Chester Zoo is three miles away and it's a ten-minute drive to Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet or 15 minutes to the viewpoint at Helsby Hill.

By car: 4-hour (200-mile) drive from London or 1 hour (40 miles) from Manchester. Parking is available on site.

By train: Chester Station, with connecting links to London and Manchester, is a ten-minute taxi ride away. Book trains to Chester Station.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

As with many Cheshire country house hotels, the DoubleTree began life as a historic manor house (in this case, the 18th-century Hoole Hall) that has since acquired much larger new extensions. The public areas are spacious, bright and modern and there are some interesting Chester-themed photos and artworks hanging on the walls.

THE FACILITIES

Check-in was quick and efficient and the staff were friendly throughout. A major selling point on the facilities front is the popular spa, spread over three floors. There's also a billiards room and electric car charging station, and reception sells tickets for Chester Zoo, which saves queueing when you get there.
