OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The busy A50 runs past the front of the building but at the back, all is rural, with cattle grazing alongside the river Dane. Close to Junction 18 of the M6, The Vicarage is easy to reach by car but also feasible by train, with services to Manchester and Crewe from Holmes Chapel station. Nearby Knutsford deserves a visit, as do the impressive estates of Tatton and Arley, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jodrell Bank.

By car: 4 hours by car (200 miles) from London or 1 hour (30 miles) from Manchester. Parking is available on site.

By train: Holmes Chapel is the closest station (1 mile) and has direct links to Manchester. Crewe Station is 20 mins away in a taxi and has direct links to London. Book trains to Cheshire.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The Vicarage looks instantly appealing, with its white rendered façade and wisteria growing around the porch. Inside, too, there's plenty of charm with stone flagged floors, old wooden beams and a big open fire. Historic features are mixed with modern touches (moody paint colours, potted plants, neon signs) to good-looking effect.

THE FACILITIES

Staff are friendly and attentive, and reception keeps some tourist information leaflets and details of walks in the surrounding area. To one side of the bar is a games room with a dart board, pool room and TV, and the bar sometimes hosts live music or screenings of major football matches.

BED AND BATH

The six individually styled suites in the main inn get the lion's share of the character, with period features, extra space, and more luxurious bathrooms and furnishings. The remaining 20 bedrooms, in the newer, non-listed wing, are smaller and more simply furnished, with mostly monochrome décor and white-tiled shower rooms.

Room types: Signature Double, Signature Twin, Superior King, Executive King

Key amenities: ensuite with rainmaker shower, TV, comfy reading chair, Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

All-day dining is the name of the game, and the menu mixes traditional British favourites with Mediterranean and Asian influences - steak and ale pie and fish and chips sit alongside the likes of grilled halloumi, tempura king prawn skewer, chicken parmigiana and teriyaki duck breast. Plenty of choices for vegans, too.

The Riverside and Courtyard Terrace: British classics, Asian and Mediterranean influences. Open daily. Mains start at £14.

The Hut: heated outdoor bar open year-round. Cocktails, dining and live music.
