The location is the only thing that lets this hotel down, just a bit too far from town or the beach to walk to either. However, it's on a bus route if you want to be car-free and you can take some pretty woodland walks from the hotel. The shops and bars of St Helier are a 25-minute walk, or a 6-min drive. The beach at Greve d'Azette is a 20-minute walk or a 4-min drive.

By plane: flights from London Gatwick and London Heathrow to Jersey Airport take around 1 hour. The hotel is then a 20-minute taxi ride from the airport.

This pretty pink granite manor house always looks its best, whether it's with clusters of candles by the front door at night or floral hanging baskets in summer. Inside the interiors are fresh and contemporary while retaining a sense of history. The wood panelling in the restaurant gives a great atmosphere.

Each room is individually-styled with both classic and contemporary furnishings. Some are understated with perhaps a navy headboard and sky blue chairs; others are vibrant with floral fabrics and plaid. All have smart TVs and fruit bowls. Bathrooms have rainfall showers, some rooms have tubs.

Chef Andrew Baird has been with the hotel for more than 30 years and his food is renowned throughout the island. Expect good portions of exquisitely prepared local produce, perhaps a starter of Jersey crab with yuzu and Bloody Mary followed by a glazed slow-cooked short rib of beef with crispy bacon crumble and Bordélaise sauce.

The restaurant: 3 AA Rosettes, modern British cuisine, seasonal menus, kitchen garden, sandwiches, afternoon tea. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mains from £28.50.

The bar: cocktails, over 550 vintages of wine.
