IF YOU think downhill skiing is scarily fast, you should see speed skiing, in which the aim is to cover a kilometre of smooth piste in around 18 seconds. The course above Arc 2000, on the Aiguille Rouge is one of the world's fastest, but it is open to you and me. For a fee, you get the use of equipment and a certificate of your time.
PLUS POINTS: Excellent steep skiing on the Aiguille Rouge. Excellent off-piste skiing. Big intermediate ski area. Ski-in, ski- out accommodation. Car-free resorts. Reliable snow at Arc 2000.
MINUS POINTS: Dreary modern buildings. Hardly any mountain restaurants. Nothing to do but ski.
