A cold winter’s day is the perfect opportunity to fantasise about dream holiday destinations and Airbnb has fairy-tale properties in abundance – from castles to treehouses.

The homesharing site has revealed its most liked properties on Instagram in 2018 for the second year running.

The 10 most popular images were snapped by lucky guests during their stays and showcase some of the most desirable and envy-inducing getaways on the planet.

At number one on the list was the LUC 22 Boutique Alpine Retreat in Queenstown, New Zealand.

Taken by David Chachi, the picture of a pristine bathtub in front of a panorama of lush mountains and Lake Wakatipu proved to be the most popular photo on Airbnb’s Instagram in 2018, with more than 100,000 likes.

Of the 10 images, almost half were taken in Italy, evidencing the European country’s enduring popularity with travellers from around the world.

Popular themes running throughout the pictures include bodies of water – Lake Como in Italy, Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand, the Amalfi coast in Italy and the Hawkesbury River in Australia – and rooms with exceptional views.

The appeal of getting away from it all shows no sign of abating, either, if these pictures are anything to go by. Many of the shots reveal secluded or remote destinations, such as the Mojave Desert in California and a wooden treehouse in New York State, while Trastevere in Rome was the only urban destination in the top 10.

More than one in eight people around the world have an Instagram account and with travellers now able to book holidays directly through Instagram, the social media platform has become a force to be reckoned with in a competitive travel market.

Jetsetters hoping to make next year’s cut are encouraged to tag Instagram snaps of their Airbnb properties with the hashtag #airbnb
